CD-ROM Backup/Archive Service

All forms of magnetic storage media will fail - eventually. It's simply a matter of time. It may happen years from now, or it may happen tomorrow. You can never be sure.

As a result, if your essential backup files are stored on hundreds of old magnetic floppy disks, digital tape or removable cartridges (ZIP, Syquest, etc.), they are at constant risk of magnetic media failures which could make them unusable and unrecoverable.

How can you protect these valuable backup files and archives against loss or corruption caused by magnetic media failures? By having 5-Minute Mac consolidate your old files on high-capacity, universally-compatible, absolutely-permanent CD-ROM disks!

Although they are popular in professional offices, CD-Recorders are still too expensive for most users to justify the expense. That's why 5-Minute Mac offers CD-Recording services to all of our customers.

How much does CD-Recording cost?

Our flat fee for creating a CD-ROM disk of your backup files and archives is only $50 per CD-ROM. (It takes about an hour to prepare and record a CD.) And duplicate copies of the first CD are only $25 each. You can put as much or as little on each disk as you prefer (the maximum per disk is around 600 Megabytes). And the price includes all file preparation, recording and media costs - even pickup and delivery from your home or office. That's less than the cost of ZIP disks or floppy diskettes!

What type of files can be recorded?

Any file that you can store on a hard drive can be recorded on a CD. We can copy your existing files to our own portable hard drives, or accept your existing archives on ZIP cartridges or floppy disks.

How long does it take?

From the time we receive your files, we can usually have your CD-ROM disk(s) recorded and back in your hands within 48 hours.

Who needs this service?

  1. Anyone who currently stores important backup files and archives on unreliable magnetic media like floppy disks, digital tape, or ZIP and Syquest cartridges.
  2. Publishing professionals who generate large files measuring 10 MB or more. The average cost per megabyte of CD-ROM storage is only a fraction of the cost of other storage media.
  3. Anyone who has dozens of existing backup disks scattered around their home or office. Consolidating files on just a few high-capacity CD-ROM disks helps increase productivity and reduce the chance of lost or missing disks.
  4. Anyone who wants to share archives with Windows PC users. CD-ROM disks can be made cross-platform compatible.
  5. Anyone who wants to share existing archives with other Mac users that don't have a compatible removable storage device.
  6. iMac owners who want to use older Macintosh files stored on SCSI devices or floppy disks,.
  7. Anyone who currently has no backup files (shame on you) and wants to increase their system performance and reliability by reducing the number of old data files stored on their internal hard drive.
