Why Mac?: 1 of 11

Introduction

Hello! This is Don Miller.

You know, when we first started planning this web site, I really had no intention of including a "Why Mac?" section. After all, there are plenty of great "evangelistic" Macintosh sites out there already.

Then something happened to change my mind.

While at the supermarket, I ran into an old friend who I hadn't seen in years. After discussing all the basic pleasantries, our conversation turned to business. When he asked where I was working these days, I proudly answered, "I just started a computer consulting business."

"Really? I do some freelance computer work, too," he said.

"Let me guess. Windows?"

"Of course."

"We only do Mac."

For a moment, he just stared. You could almost hear his brain churning through data to find the appropriate response. When it finally arrived, it wasn't particularly encouraging. He made that sound. You know the one. Sort of a sigh, snort and raspberry all rolled into one. It made me suspect that he didn't think much of my choice. So, I just had to ask...

"Have you ever used one?"

"Nope, I only use Windows."

Right then and there, I knew we had to include this section. Why? Because his response confirmed my longtime suspicion: Most of the people who are absolutely, positively sure that Wintel computers are the "best" have never even TRIED to use a Mac!

Once that decision was made, I eventually decided to take things a few steps further. It wasn't enough to simply present the facts. People have been doing that for years, with very poor results. Instead, I wanted our Why Mac section to address two topics that I've never seen mentioned in any other pro-Mac argument. Two subjects that I was in a unique position to talk about.

You see, prior to starting 5-Minute Mac, I worked for sixteen years as an advertising copywriter and creative director. After spending all those years analyzing marketing case studies and research statistics, I began to see a consistent pattern in the way people THINK about what they buy.

That realization led to what may be thousands of hours of research and testing to clarify a theory that I've come to call: "Perceptive Ignorance." (Today, in between service calls to our Mac clients, I present seminars to local colleges, marketing firms and businesses on how "Perceptive Ignorance" affects consumer marketing and communications.)

It was "Perceptive Ignorance" that made my old friend respond the way he did. And it is the very same "Perceptive Ignorance" that makes it impossible for you, or me, or anyone else to "objectively" compare any two products based purely on the facts. For that reason, the next page of our "Why Mac?" section talks about something you've probably never even thought of before: What "Perceptive Ignorance" is, and how it affects every decision we make... including our computer choices.

Then, as a special addition to our Why Mac? section, Pages 3-4 include a very brief history of the personal computer industry. Those of us who were around to watch the early development of this industry have quite a different view of today's market. I suspect many Wintel users will find the facts surprising... possibly even shocking.

Finally, beginning on Page 5 , we have made an effort to strip away any existing perceptions and analyze the real facts about how Wintel and Mac computers compare to each other in the real world, by answering some of the "Perceptively Ignorant" questions we hear and read each day.

Thank you for taking the time to visit this section of our web site. I hope it allows you to enjoy years of powerful, PRODUCTIVE computing! To navigate through this section, simply follow the directional arrows to read each page in order. And, feel free to print or distribute these pages as often as you would like. (Please distribute all 11 pages together.)
